چکیده

Josephson-junction arrays are ideal model systems to study a variety of phenomena such as phase transitions, frustration effects, vortex dynamics and chaos. In this review, we focus on the quantum dynamical properties of lowcapacitance Josephson-junction arrays. The two characteristic energy scales in these systems are the Josephson energy, associated with the tunneling of Cooper pairs between neighboring islands, and the charging energy, which is the energy needed to add an extra electron charge to a neutral island. The phenomena described in this review stem from the competition between single-electron effects with the Josephson effect. They give rise to (quantum) Superconductor-Insulator phase transitions that occur when the ratio between the coupling constants is varied or when the external fields are varied. We describe the dependence of the various control parameters on the phase diagram and the transport properties close to the quantum critical points. On the superconducting side of the transition, vortices are the topological excitations. In low-capacitance junction arrays these vortices behave as massive particles that exhibit quantum behavior. We review the various quantum-vortex experiments and theoretical treatments of their quantum dynamics. Typeset using REVTEX

Proximity effects and vortex dynamics in superconducting heterostructures

Vortex lattice dynamics has been studied in thin Nb superconducting films sputtered on top of a dense triangular array of V dots with and without an intermediate SiO2 insulating layer. While the insulating layer modifies only slightly the Nb film corrugation, it reduces superconducting commensurability effects (CE) substantially. This implies that superconducting commensurability is dominated b...

We carry out an extensive Monte Carlo study of phase transitions in 2D superconducting networks, in an applied magnetic field, for square and honeycomb geometries. We consider both systems with a dilute vortex density 1/q, and dense systems near " full frustration " with vortex density 1/2 − 1/q. The dilute case gives the continuum limit as q → ∞, and serves as a model for a uniform superconduc...

Vortex Matter in Mesoscopic Superconducting Disks and Rings

Phase transitions between different (i.e. giant and multi-vortex) superconducting states and between the superconducting-normal state of mesoscopic disks and rings are studied in the presence of an external magnetic field by solving the two non-linear Ginzburg-Landau equations self-consistently. The flux through a circular disk with a hole in the middle is not quantized.

Structure formation, phase transitions and drag interactions in multicomponent su- perconductors and superfluids

Superconductivity and superfluidity are some of the most fundamental and important phenomena of modern physics. However, much theoretical work for such systems so far has been restricted to the onecomponent case. For multicomponent systems, the spectrum of possible topological defects, their structure formation and associated phase transitions, can all be much richer than in the one-component c...
